It was not until the late 80’s or early 90’s that people started to be more conscious about noise in the workplace and the need to protect your ears from constant loud noises. Before this people would work long hours in very noisy condition’s both inside and outside. You would see men using loud drills digging holes in the ground or people would work in very noisy factories without any noise protection. During the late 80’s with the advent of health and safety laws in the work place and in an effort to reduce the amount of people who are both injured and effected by working in conditions where it can effect their health people started to look at the effects of loud noise on workers hearing. The results of the investigation was that constant loud noises in the work place did effect peoples hearing and that solutions should be found to limit the damage caused by these noises.

Laws and rules were brought into the workplace and limits of which people should be subjected to were brought out. You had inspections by teams which went around measuring the amount of noise in the workplace with machines if it was too high you either had to provide some sort of ear protection or you would have to reduce the amount of noise generated in the workplace. The easier option was to provide ear or hearing protection. The hearing protection is available in two different forms the ear plug which goes inside of the ear and the ear muffs which you cover your ears with and look very similar to large style headphones.

The cheaper of the options is the internal ear plugs which are designed to fit inside of the persons ear canal and limit the amount of noise which the ear canal picks up, these ear plugs come in three basic forms the expandable foam ear plugs these expandable plugs are made from a material which can expand into the shape of a persons ear canal. You roll the plugs into a thin cylinder which will then fit into the ear canal and then expands and fits the ear canal snuggly; this will then limit the amount of noise which can enter the ear canal. The second type of ear plug is the reusable plugs which are made from materials such as silicone, soft plastic or rubber and can be made in sizes or you can get a one size fits all one of the big advantages of this type of ear plug is you can clean and wash them and they are easy to fit and wear and more comfortable and effective than the disposable ear plugs. The Third type of ear plug is the Canal caps which look very similar to ear plugs but are joined by a band of some description these ear plugs are good for intense noise and noise which starts and stops randomly.

The rival to ear plugs are the hearing protection muffs which look very similar to the old style headphones. These ear muffs come in a variety of different designs, styles, makes and effectiveness but are generally as good as the ear plugs as well as being more comfortable to wear than the ear plugs and although they are more expensive than the ear plugs but are well worth the money and much more comfortable than the ear plugs. Make sure you wear your ear protection if you work in a noisy environment otherwise you will lose your hearing.
